IPPI Card: A New Scheme

The IPPI Card is now available per year. Federations that decide so can issue the Card to all its licensed pilots for a small yearly fee. Licenses are renewed every year, so IPPI level can be adjusted accordingly.

Paragliding Aerobatics champions crowned

23532476961 7a6a311708_kIt was a double celebration for Team France last night (December 8), when French pilots Tim Alongi and Eliot Nochez were awarded the gold and silver medals for the FAI World Air Games Solo Paragliding Aerobatics event.

A crowd of more than 200 people cheered on the new champions, as they stepped up to collect their medals alongside Horacio Llorens of Spain, who claimed the bronze.

Seven steps to success: an acrobatic paragliding masterclass with FAI World Air Games winner Tim Alongi

23474709841 6306630ae2_kFrench paraglider Tim Alongi, 24, is the new FAI World Air Games Paragliding Aerobatics Champion.

Alongi also won the silver medal in the Sychronised Paragliding Aerobatics competition, along with his partner - and solo silver medallist - Eliot Nochez, also from France. 

When we caught up with Alongi afterwards at the Palm Dropzone in Dubai, he gave us his seven top tips for acro paragliding success.

Cotet hits the golden target

23457372852 2ed77b7cac_kThe winning pilots in the FAI World Air Games paragliding accuracy landing event were presented with their medals at the Palm Dropzone today (December 6).

Thailand's Nunnapat Phuchong was first up to collect her gold medal for attaining first place in the women's event.

Paragliding accuracy goes down to the wire

George-CurtetWith nail-biting thrills down to the very final flight, the paragliding accuracy landing competition concluded yesterday after 12 rounds. 

George Cotet from Romania finished in first place, Qiang Ma from China in second place and Goran Djurkovic from Serbia in third. The top female was Nunnapat Phuchong from Thailand, in 10th place overall. 

Excitement levels reached fever pitch in last six rounds, as Cotet and many times World Champion, Matjaz Feraric from Slovenia, battled for supremacy.

An unforgettable start to the FAI World Air Games

23133288149 527c88f702_zThe FAI World Air Games officially kicked off with a bang last night, as the 3,000-strong audience at the Opening Ceremony were wowed with an extravaganza of dancing, zip-line performances and fireworks.

Dropping in on the open-air stage, performers dressed as skydivers and paramotor pilots flew over the crowd suspended on wires, taking the astounded audience on a theatrical flight over glorious Dubai.

Paragliding accuracy landing competition gets underway

22834953584 c06921fbcf_zDay two of the FAI World Air Games and it was a challenging start for some of the competitors aiming to hit the target in the paraglider accuracy landing competition at the Beach Dropzone.

Reigning World Champion Matjaz Feraric from Slovenia struggled to judge the conditions and landed 28cm away from the target instead of within one centimetre as he'd hoped. "I saw the glider before me left their approach too high and overshot, so I came in lower," he said. "But then I was too far to one side and landed short."

US Paragliding Aerobatics pilot to unveil new tricks at FAI World Air Games

Max-Marien-JPGIt's rare to find competitors from the US in Paragliding Aerobatics competitions. The sport of paragliding has a relatively small following there, and there are few pilots who embark on the niche daredevil discipline of performing aerobatic manoeuvres in the sky.

One American who does compete is relative newcomer Max Marien, 27. He has come all the way from San Diego in California to Dubai to compete with what he says is a trio of new stunts he's developed. "They've never been seen in a competition before," he said ahead of the contest in the United Arab Emirates.
