The FAI World Air Games officially kicked off with a bang last night, as the 3,000-strong audience at the Opening Ceremony were wowed with an extravaganza of dancing, zip-line performances and fireworks. Dropping in on the open-air stage, performers dressed as skydivers and paramotor pilots flew over the crowd suspended on wires, taking the astounded audience on a theatrical flight over glorious Dubai. Excitement is mounting in Dubai, where the stars of the air sports world have touched down for the 2015 FAI World Air Games (WAG). With 854 competitors from 55 countries competing in more than 20 different disciplines, this year’s WAG is set to be the best yet. "This is the biggest World Air Games ever," said Susanne Schödel, the secretary general of the World Air Sports Federation (FAI). The 2015 FAI Awards Ceremony tonight celebrated the achievements of air sports men and women through the prestigious FAI Medals and Diploma, and the FAI-Breitling Awards. The FAI is continuing its actions to keep air sports clean from doping. In that frame, we are trying to inssure that all athletes participating in FAI sanctioned events (any event registered in the FAI Calendar) and who may therefore be subject to doping control must request a TUE before taking a prohibited medication. The FAI is pleased to announce the list of the winners for the 2015 FAI Young Artists Contest. An international jury selected the three best paintings for each of the categories: Junior (ages 6-9), Intermediate (ages 10-13), Senior (ages 14-17). The FAI Environmental Commission has been acting quietly for years, considering and preparing advice for all sporting and recreational aviators. The original challenge was to provide the basics for establishing a code, a presence on the FAI website and setting up standards for air sports environmentally friendly activities. When these tasks were completed, one might think that EnvC just has to wait for some opportunities to arise to speak of birds and flowers alongside our beautiful flying sites. It may not be the case.
