50th ANNIVERSARY OF KOMAROV’S RECORDS
On 12 October 1964, theworld’s firstmulti-crewspacecraft
Voshkodwas launched fromBaikonur, Kazakhstan. It lifted
three Soviet cosmonauts into orbit: Vladimir Komarov
(commander), Konstantin Feoktistov and Boris Yegorov.
They returned safely to Earth one day later.
Four records for “Spacecraft withmore thanone astronaut”
were ratified by the FAI for this mission: Duration
(24h 17 min 3 sec), Altitude in elliptical orbit (408 km),
Greatest mass lifted to altitude (5320 kg) and Distance
travelled (669785.027 km).
In total, there were only two Voshkod missions. During
the second one in 1965, Alexey Leonov became the first
person to exit from a spaceship.
Komarovmet a tragic end in1967, whenhis spacecraft Soyuz
crashed into the ground. He thus became the first person
to die while serving on a cosmic flight. The V.M. Komarov
Diploma was established by the FAI in 1970 to honour his
memory. It may be awarded to astronauts or members of
multi-seater crews for outstanding achievements in the
field of exploration of outer space.
