The Tochigi Hot Air Balloon International Championship (FAI Category 1 event) will take place in the Japanese prefecture of Tochigi from 20 to 25 November 2012.
This event is the only FAI Category 1 event in the world with Observers.

President hands over FAI flag 2 During the closing ceremony of the 56th Coupe Aéronautique Gordon Bennett in Ebnat-Kappel (Switzerland), FAI President John Grubbström (right) handed over the FAI flag to Didier Sartelet, town mayor of Heillecourt and Vice President of the urban community of Greater Nancy (France), where the next edition of the Coupe Aéronautique Gordon Bennett will be held next year from 22 to 31 August 2013.

The Gordon Bennett Cup is the most famous aviation event in the world. The objective of the race is simple: to fly the furthest distance from the start (Ebnat-Kappel, Switzerland) using the open airspace available.

This international gas balloon competition was initiated in 1906 by the adventurer James Gordon Bennett. This race is the 56th, 106 years after the first one.
The winning country has the right to stage the race two years later.
In 2010 the Swiss team won the race with a straight line distance flight of 2434 km from Bristol, England in 59 hours.
