It’s a family affair: Jerzy and Jan Makula

Machula WGAC2016“I have four sons, Jan is the youngest. But you know, when he was very little he was afraid of flying, he would not even touch the glider.” Jerzy Makula is a legend in glider aerobatics, often called the ‘grandfather of the sport’. A commercial pilot he has been at the forefront of developing glider aerobatics for four decades, pushing the boundaries and coaching individual pilots and national teams. He has been Glider Aerobatics World Champion seven times.

Now, his son Jan, 22, is following in his father’s footsteps and competing in the Unlimited class at the World Glider Aerobatic Championships. “I don’t remember when I first went flying with my dad, but I was young,” explains Jan.

Hungary eyes double-gold at the FAI World Aerobatic Glider Championships

19th FAI World Glider Aerobatic Championships takes off

WGAC2016The 19th FAI World Glider Aerobatic Championships start on Wednesday 20 July 2016 – and there will be brand new trophies for the winners at the end of the 10-day competition.

The competition is the highlight of the international Glider Aerobatics calendar and will take place at Matko Airport in Hungary.

Tamás Abranyi prepares for the 19th FAI Glider Aerobatic World Championships

WGAC2016 banner_notes_2Some of the world’s best Glider Aerobatic pilots are heading to Hungary later this month, for a 10-day competition that will see two world champions crowned. Running in parallel, the 19th FAI Glider Aerobatic World Championship and the seventh Advanced Glider Aerobatic World Championship will take place at Matko Airport in Hungary from 20-30 July. The events are organised by the Hungarian Aeronautical Association and the Hungarian Aerobatic Club.

Workshop and Test Events Ahead of The World Games 2017 in Wroclaw

A three day workshop took place this week in Wroclaw, Poland, as part of the preparation for the World Games 2017. The attendees included the Event Directors and Officials of the three disciplines selected to the World Games 2017, FAI Member Representatives from France and Hungary, the Director of the Wroclaw Aeroclub and FAI Head Office staff.

USA Tops the Final Medal Table of the FAI World Air Games

FAI Medal - Small ImageThe United States has finished at the top of the medal table at the FAI World Air Games Dubai 2015, with 7 gold medals, 4 silver and 6 bronze. USA led a tight battle with France which just missed the top by 1 gold medal and takes second place with 6 gold, 10 silver, and 2 bronze medals. Russia came third with 6 gold, 4 silver, 3 bronze.

Champions! Aerobatics success for Italy and France

IMG 6860Huge cheers went up at Dubai’s Jumeirah Beach Hotel last night (December 5), as the new FAI World Air Games aerobatics champions - France's Olivier Masurel and Italian gliding ace Luca Bertossio - received their gold medals.

The two pilots grinned in delight as they showed off their cherished new jewellery to the crowd.

Glider aerobatics: Bertossio takes gold for Italy

IMG 6274"You're part of the aircraft, you feel it in your skin." Italian Luca Bertossio, 25, is talking about why he swapped motorised aerobatics for gliders after his win in the aerobatic gliding competition.

"With a motor you always have an excuse, but you don't need it. Two wings are all you need to fly in four dimensions. You have to get it right first time. Even your landing. You can't go around for a second try," he explained.
