Fribourg ready to welcome the famous Gordon Bennett Cup

Launch GBR2015-2_Jean-Pierre-Girard61st Aeronautical Cup for Gas Balloons in 2017

The Canton of Fribourg will have the honour of organising the prestigious Aeronautical Cup for Gas Balloons, the ‘Gordon Bennett’ (FAI World Long Distance Gas Balloon Championship) in 2017. In Spain last weekend, the FAI Ballooning Commission (CIA) (which runs the FAI’s ballooning activities) confirmed the choice of Fribourg. It adopted the proposal made by the National Ballooning Commission (FSA) back in November 2015. This international competition, which brings together the world’s best balloonists, will take place near the airstrip in Epagny, just below the Château de Gruyères and amongst the foothills of the Alps. The event will run from 7 to 16 September 2017. For ‘four cornerstones of the Fribourg economy’ a dream will come true.

CIAM Flyer (1-2016) - International classes for free flight scale model flying competitions around the world

CIAM Flyer 1-2016The FAI F4 class links the community of scale aeromodellers in indoor and outdoor classes.

Free flight scale – a Builder class

To some modellers accustomed to using the advancing technology associated with radio controlled flight, the idea of operating a model without these controls may seem puzzling. Even the established free flight classes for which FAI rules have been developed, have become increasing technical in the design of airframes and in the materials used. These classes now seem a long step away from the early free flight classes, in which part of the challenge was in the designing and building of models for local and international competition, as in Wakefield rubber endurance class for example.
