Air Sports to Open Up The World Games 2017

The Air Sports events have been scheduled at the very beginning of The World Games 2017 in Wroclaw, Poland, together with Dance Sport, Finswimming, Life Saving, Roller Sports and Sports Climbing, the International World Games Association announced yesterday.

The events of the three air sports disciplines selected to feature on the programme of the Games, namely Parachuting Canopy Piloting, Glider Aerobatics and Paramotoring, will take place concurrently from 21 to 24 July 2017, starting the day after the Opening Ceremony on 20 July.

The Games, which will showcase a total of 28 sports, will continue until the 30 August when the final medals in Gymnastics, Inline Hockey, Muaythai, Tug of War and Waterskiing will be awarded. The Closing Ceremony is due to be held on the evening of that same day.

“The unveiling of the World Games 2017 daily schedule brings us a step closer to the event to which we very much look forward”, FAI Sports and Marketing Director Markus Haggeney declared on his return from the Competitions Managers’ Meeting in Wroclaw. “The worldwide impact of this event and the great promotion that the participating sports enjoy from it make of The World Games an event of significant importance to FAI. We are glad to see that preparations for the Games are progressing steadily.”

IWGA CEO Joachim Gossow said: “We had to compose a mix of sports and disciplines to ensure highlights on each day of The World Games. There is always the challenge of balancing weekends with the days in between, because the organisers expect more spectators on Saturdays and Sundays. At the same time we also had to bear in mind the number of athletes that will be in Wroclaw each day. It’s a challenge for every host city to deal with transport and accommodation for large numbers of people, so we had to consider these factors, too.”

About The World Games

The World Games are organised and governed by the International World Games Association (IWGA), under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The next World Games will take place in Wroclaw, Poland, from 20 to 30 July 2017. This decision was announced by Ron Froehlich, former President of the International World Games Association, on 12 January 2012 on the occasion of the awarding ceremony in the Olympic Museum in Lausanne.

The 2013 edition took place in Cali, Colombia, over a period of 11 days from July 25 to August 4 2013. 31 official sports featured in the programme, including Parachuting Canopy Piloting and Paragliding Accuracy, while AeroMusicals (Aeromodelling) was present as a demonstration sport. The Parachuting and Paragliding competitions ran on the same site, for maximum spectator interest, from 1 to 4 August 2013. Some 65 competitors (36 for Parachuting and 29 for Paragliding) gained entry to the Games. In addition, 2 Indoor AeroMusicals pilots made the trip to Cali to show the beauty of their sport.
