FAI-Breitling Awards 2014 - Call for nominations

We are now calling for nominations for the FAI-Breitling Awards for 2014: the Breitling Milestone Trophy and the Breitling Youngster Award. Both awards will be presented this October at the Awards Ceremony of the FAI General Conference in Thailand, where the winners will be invited and hosted by Breitling.

Gliding in The World Games

The Aero Club of Poland is very active in promoting the idea of "olympic gliding". The Polish foundation "Smyki na start" whose main goal is promoting engineering and technology among youngsters together with Aero Club of Poland and Warsaw University of Technology are co-operting in order to convince the organisers of the IWG in Wroclaw to include gliding in the World games.

Green airsports honoured with new environmental award

The FAI Environmental Commission (EnvC) has established the Angelo d’Arrigo Diploma, a new FAI environmental award which aims at recognising and promoting major contributions in the field of environmental and sustainable development, in accordance with the development of a philosophy and a vision of sport aviation that increasingly wants to be respectful of the environment that surrounds it.

CIAM Flyer (01-2014) - To compensate the assymetrical forces

Around the era of 1950 some single engine fighter planes were fitted with two contra-rotating coaxial propellers in order to compensate the serious troubles caused by the assymetrical forces of their extremely powerful piston engines, normally swinging just one huge propeller. Mostly the late production Spitfires, determined to operate from aircraft carriers, were powered that way and are a nice example for this development.

CIAM and CONTEST team up to promote aeromodelling

The FAI Aeromodelling Commission (CIAM) and CONTEST, the German company organising the CONTEST-Eurotour series of aeromodelling events, have agreed to closely work together for the good of aeromodelling by signing a Memorandum of Understanding.

Paragliding Pre-worlds concludes successfully in Colombia

The Paragliding Pre-Worlds in Roldanillo, Colombia, came to a successful conclusion last week.  Four tasks were flown in 6 days and 147 pilots had the opportunity to try out CIVL’s experimental ‘Final Glide Decelerator’ techniques, the conical end of speed section (CESS) and the arrival altitude time bonus (AATB).

FAI names Susanne Schödel as new Secretary General

The FAI is pleased to announce the appointment of Susanne Schödel as its new Secretary General, starting on 1 March 2014. Schödel, a 41 year old German native, combines experience in airsports, management of non-profit making organisations and political matters.

Final list of venues for 6th FAI Sailplane Grand Prix series

The period for acceptance of bids to hold a qualifying FAI Sailplane Grand Prix expired on the 31st of December 2013. The last qualifying event to be approved is in the Czech Republic at Frydland which will be held in May 2015 in the Club class.
