Cornelia Mihai on her way to 147.14 m score on her second Distance round
So another day of sunshine and blue skies, and Canopy Piloting. With a 9.00 am start we went stright into the 3rd and final round of the Zone Accuracy event. The Zone Accuracy was won by Curtis Bartholomew, USA, with a total score of 292, 2nd was Christian Weber Jenson, DEN with 272, and 3rd Nick Batsch, USA with 269. Kevin Walter, AUS is in 4th place with 266 and Mario Fattoruso, ITA with 261 was in 5th place ahead of his brother Amando Fattoruso in 12th with 250 points.
The two hour slot was up at 12.00 and so half way through the 3rd and final round for Distance we had to stop and make way for the next Air Sport - Gliders - for their spot in the sunshine.
No more parachuting today, but I shall be reporting tomorrow on what, I am sure is going to be a stunning Opening Ceremony this evening, if the previous DIPC's are anything to go by.
Regan Tetlow, our own Parachuting Commentator who keeps the crowds and the jumpers amused and informed throughout the Canopy Piloting event - here with a few of the Canopy Piloting judges at the WAG. The majority of these judges are multi-rated and once the Canopy Piloting event is finished will be moving to either the Race Course DZ or the Beach DZ where they will be involved in the judging of the other Parachuting Disciplines taking place at this World Air Games.
Whilst the Games have started with (almost) the newest discipline, the Beach DZ will be the home of the oldest discipline, Accuracy Landings, - both a Team and an Individual event for both Male and Female teams; also Junior Male and Female Individual Events. At the Horse Race DZ we will have the freefall disciplines of Formation Skydiving with its 4 events, 4-Way Open, 4-Way Female, VFS and 8-Way.; Artistic Events with both Freestyle Skydiving and Freefly and Speed Skydiving (the actual newest event to be showcased here in Dubai). Finally, also at the Horse Race we have the third of our canopy based events - Canopy Formations with both 4-Way Rotations, 4-Way Sequential and 2-Way Sequential events.
As you can imagine this is an exacting and exciting schedule of events to contemplate. They will all commence on the 6th December - 3 days time so the final planning and preparation is being put into place - overseen by Helmut Schlecht, the Parachuting Event Director of the FAI World Air Games.
