Asian Beach Games 2012 - Task 11 The Eight [2]

2012-asian-beach-games-caiThe last day was welcomed by very light winds, ideal for the final task of the competition. With the medal ceremony due around noon today, Competition Director Zhang WEI opted for a slalom and a repeat of the popular “The Eight”.

The on-site organisation had been excellent all week, so take-off was briefed to start in just 20 minutes, with the first competitors taking off on time.

There were no dramas to match last night’s fevered excitement; the unfortunate Apisit OPASAIMLIKIT (THA) suffered a mechanical problem and cut his run short before gliding to a safe landing, but this last task wrapped up what had been a very safe 5 days flying.

George MACAK (THA) started the day with a commanding lead in the overall table and only needed to finish in order to win gold in the Combined class. But there was honour at stake and the Thai teammates weren’t ready to take it easy. Kittiphop PHROMMAT recorded a time of 45.1s – a really quick performance and difficult to beat. And so it proved to be; George was quick with 46.9s but the honours went to Kittiphop. It was a clean sweep for the Thai team, winning the first four places on the leaderboard.

That’s it. The final scores will have to be verified and approved by the Jury before the meday ceremony in just a couple of hours’ time.
