Asthma medications

The situation regarding beta-2 agonist asthma medications changed when the 2009 WADA Code was introduced. The medications involved are:

  • formoterol
  • salbutamol
  • salmeterol
  • terbutaline

Some athletes do not need to apply for a TUE before competing:

RTP Athletes

Those in the Registered Testing Pool must obtain a TUE in the normal way prior to taking the medication.

International Athletes

Those competing in international events may apply for a TUE before competing. They may instead apply for a retroactive TUE.

National Athletes

This depends on your national anti-doping organisation's policy; normally you may apply for a retroactive TUE.

* Any athlete who is relying on applying for a retroactive TUE should read Annex 1 of the International Standard for Testing to make sure that their application will be approved:

Athletes applying for a TUE should use the FAI Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUE) form.
