Main decisions taken at the FAI Gliding Commission 2013 Annual Meeting

The 2013 Annual Meeting of the FAI Gliding Commission (IGC) was held on 1 and 2 March 2013 in Papendal, Netherlands.

Significant emphasis was placed on the ‘Safety Pays’ initiative. A Jury & Stewards meeting on 28 February 2013 included discussions on how to change pilot mentality, practical lessons on cockpit evacuation, analysis of flight tracks post-flight, surveys and a peer reporting system during competition.

Discussions included how to recognise and reward safe flying. A proposal was approved to oblige pilots to use at least two safety features from a list drawn up by the IGC Safety Group (official name of the group to be decided upon later), including, for instance, rear view mirrors, spinal protection device, emergency locator beacon or glider parachute recovery system.

The FAI Sailplane Grand Prix project will enter the operational phase now that the MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) between FAI Sailplane Grand Prix and FAME has been agreed.
