logo envir 01 cmyk 300-15 mThe 2013 Annual Meeting of the FAI Environmental Commission (EnvC) was held on 9 February 2013 in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Here are the main decisions and discussions that took place during the meeting:

New President

The Delegates elected Frenchman Pierre Duval as the new President of the Commission, replacing Bernald Smith from USA, who had held this position since 2011.

New FAI Environmental Award

The Delegates approved the creation of an FAI Environmental Award which will reward individuals or organisations that have contributed significantly to the defence of and respect for the environment affected by air sports. The activities will include: scientific research, private, public or commercial events or activities, developed or promoted directly by pilots, sport flying clubs, National Airsport Controls or public or private bodies as small and medium enterprises. This new award will be presented at the 2013 General Conference and attributed for the first time at the 2014 FAI Awards Ceremony

Environmental Presentation

A request for a presentation slot at the FAI General Conference will be made, with the aim of informing and educating Members Countries about the impact of environmental issues on the future of our activities. The event might be organised jointly with the FAI Aviation and Space Education Commission (CIEA) according to their own priorities.

Permanence of the Commission

Following the creation of the Expert System in 2012 which led to 8 new Expert Groups, the question of the conversion of the Commission into an Expert Group was raised. The decision was taken to leave the Commission as it is for at least a year, so that environment experts could be recruited within the framework of the Commission, to help with the FAI work and also be available to assist National Airsport Controls (NACs). These experts could be part of a new Environment Expert Group in the future, in the case a decision is taken to dissolve the Commission and replace it with an Expert Group.
