Defending world champion, Manfred Ruhmer (AUT), dominates the Class 2 Championship!

The 20th FAI World Hang Gliding Class 2 Championship goes on from 24 July till 6 August 2017 at Aspres-sur-Buëch in the Hautes-Alpes. After four valid tasks, the world-renowned Austrian hang glider pilot Manfred Ruhmer, is dominating the competition. Class 2 world champion since 2002, he is 649 points ahead of his nearest rival, fellow Austrian Franz Pacheiner, and 674 points ahead of local French pilot, Jacques Bott. No task was set yesterday due to the strong south/southwest winds (55 to 55kph at 2000m altitude). Four more competition days are  available for competitors to try to topple the king of this discipline.

20th FAI World HG Class 2 Championship has launched in Haute Alpes.

The event will run till August 6, 2017 in Aspres-sur-Buëch (France) the main competition place. It is organized by ADPUL - an airsports association whose object is the development of the ultra-light glider.

Day 1 Task 1 15th FAI World Paragiding Championship

It was a successful start of the competition. It was cloudy at Monte Avena.The organizers moved to Rubbio take off near Bassano and there we have got fine weather conditions that allowed to have a fine 78 km task much exceeding the expectations.

Training Day. 15th FAI World Paragliding Championship

The training task, was set to 72 kilometers. Due to the clear skies, the task could have seemed easy, but just before the start, it started to get cloudy, so the pilots had to rely on the ability that led them here to compete in the world championship.

 “While we were planning it, we were expecting a very quick task” explains Maurizio Bottegal “but then the weather, which is the unrival king of this sport, suddenly changed and forced us to slow down. We were expecting an average speed of 30 km/hour, but we probably moved slower because the thermals were weak and therefore difficult to climb. Around 2.45 PM however, the conditions changed once more and the pilots could gain speed again. Nevertheless, it’s undeniable that flying today was challenging, in fact, only 25 out of 150 Pilots could arrive to Goal.

For tomorrow we are checking the weather condition because in the area surrounding Feltre forecasted storms so it is very probable that the competition will move to the area of Pedemontana del Grappa (Bassano, Marostica or Rubbio)”.

The opening ceremony took place in Feltre. Pilots followed by Palio gerolds of the 4 districts of the city proceeded to the central square.
