The FAI’s Air Sports Channel on Youtube has been re-designed to provide one channel per sport, plus a channel for the World Air Games, and one for videos relating to the FAI and the history of aviation. The new channel for CIVL is at: http://www.youtube.com/faicivl.

The latest list of ‘Competition Class’ paragliders is now available at: www.fai.org/hang_gliding/compclassgliders. A summary of the ‘Competition Class’ rules and procedures developed by the OCTWG is available at: www.fai.org/hang_gliding/octwgrules. The 2011 edition of Section 7b, containing the full rule set and a completely revised Chapter 12, is available at: www.fai.org/hang_gliding/documents. The tables showing certified PG Harnesses and certifed Helmets (PG and HG) are available at: www.fai.org/hang_gliding/safety/harnesses and www.fai.org/hang_gliding/safety/helmets respectively.

Paragliding in Piedrahita

48 nations have registered for the World Paragliding Championships and allocation is underway to bring the number of entries to 150 pilots. PG manufacturers are in the process of testing and registering their Competition Class gliders. Pilots will shortly be asked to register their intention to fly Competition Class gliders.

WXC – Fly locally, compete globally

The Worldwide XC online Contest (WXC) now has official FAI status following a successful 2 year trial. Taking advantage of its unique position, CIVL has created the ‘official’ global online contest, allowing all hang glider and paraglider pilots worldwide to see their flights scored and ranked in a single online contest. The contest (http://wxc.fai.org) opened formally on 1st October 2010.

CIVL Plenary votes for safety via certification

Delegates at the 2011 CIVL Plenary Meeting, held at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland, 26th & 27th February, have taken some important steps towards improving safety in our sport. The move towards certified-only paragliders at Cat 1 Championships comes one step closer. In the interim, a new 'competition' class is introduced with immediate effect, effectively banning untested prototypes in Cat 1 competitions, and demanding competitors register their 'competition class' gliders, at least 30 days before the event.

International insurance offer to organisers

Austrian flying school, Flugschulen-Koessen, is offering insurance services to hang gliding and paragliding competition pilots and competition organisers throughout the EU and Switzerland.

Extending the PG competition season

You would have thought that the FAI calendar of paragliding competitions scheduled in February and March would be dominated by events taking place elsewhere than the wintry Northern hemisphere. But not so! Paragliding Accuracy seems to be growing in popularity, and especially as a way of extending the competition season.
