Think skydivers just jump out of a plane, freefall for a bit then float down to the ground? Here at the FAI World Games, there's a lot more to it than that. There are about 20 parachuting gold medals up for grabs (several of which have already been claimed for the Canopy Piloting event), spread across six disciplines. “Russia! Russia!” rang out across the Skydive Dubai Palm Dropzone last night (December 11), as Russian helicopter pilots Alexander Zhuperin and Nikolay Burov stepped up for their Rotorcraft gold medals. The new FAI World Air Games champions were joined on the podium by silver medallists Michal and Marcin Szamborski from Poland, and Austrians Thomas Morgenstern and Stefan Seer, there to claim bronze. It's a tight race for first in the F3N Helicopter Freestyle/Music Style competition, as the field of nine aeromodellers battle it out with aerobatic manoeuvres that fling their 700mm rotor-span model helicopters around in the air. The championship is made up of two freestyle rounds and three rounds set to music. 1, 2, 3 for British Microlighting team!

The winners of the General Aviation and Glider Match Racing stepped up for their medals yesterday (December 9), at a ceremony held at the Sky Dubai Palm Dropzone. Polish glider pilot Sebastian Kawa claimed gold in the Glider Match Racing, after a thrilling final against Austrian Werner Amann. Tilo Holighaus of Germany took bronze. Long-standing rivals Sebastian Kawa from Poland and Austrian Werner Amann battled for gold over the desert sand dunes today (December 9) in the final of the Gliding Match Racing at the FAI World Air Games. Both their Schempp-Hirth Discus 2C gliders were towed up over the Desert Dropzone and released from 1,200m side by side. Off the map: Norevik and Strømme win the Air Navigation Race

Norwegian pilot Kurt Norevik and navigator Petter Strømme flew their way along an unmarked corridor in the desert using only a compass, a stop watch and their eyes to win the Air Navigation Race at the FAI World Air Game. The pair were among 14 teams competing in this new race designed to test piloting skills, held at the Desert Dropzone. Spectators followed the pilots as they flew the course via live tracking online. After two days of waiting for the winds to drop, the accuracy skydivers were able to start their heats at the FAI World Air Games this morning (September 9). The competition requires a wind speed of less than 7m/s or 25.2km/hour. The traditionally strong five-man teams from Slovenia, Belarus, and Russia were in predictable form, jointly leading the competition after the first two rounds. Helicopter pilot Thomas Morgenstern has finished in bronze medal position in the FAI World Air Games Parallel Slalom and Fender competition here in Dubai. The final to decide the gold and silver medallists will take place tomorrow (December 10). It was a double celebration for Team France last night (December 8), when French pilots Tim Alongi and Eliot Nochez were awarded the gold and silver medals for the FAI World Air Games Solo Paragliding Aerobatics event.
