Wing walking girls steal hearts in Dubai

Their high-flying show, reminiscent of those put on by 1920s barnstormers, was charming and breathtaking at the same time.

Paragliding accuracy landing competition gets underway

22834953584 c06921fbcf_zDay two of the FAI World Air Games and it was a challenging start for some of the competitors aiming to hit the target in the paraglider accuracy landing competition at the Beach Dropzone.

Reigning World Champion Matjaz Feraric from Slovenia struggled to judge the conditions and landed 28cm away from the target instead of within one centimetre as he'd hoped. "I saw the glider before me left their approach too high and overshot, so I came in lower," he said. "But then I was too far to one side and landed short."

Skydiver Cornelia Mihai: "I want to win!"

23385706941 265b75b903_zParachutist Cornelia Mihai punched the air after coming into land from her first jump in the skydiving swooping, or canopy piloting, competition in Dubai.

And well she might - the only female skydiver in the competition, she managed to travel a distance of well over 130m after pulling off a featherlight touch down in the swooping pool. "I'm happy with it," she said of her performance. "It's not bad for the first round."

Heat one of the Aerobatics contest kicks off the Airshow

23440139276 518328b3e3_zThe screaming roar of 330-horsepower Lycoming engines filled the skies above the Palm shorefront in Dubai today (December 2), as the first round of the Aerobatic competition got underway.

Eight so-called “unlimited pilots”, the creme de la creme of the aerobatics scene, have been selected from around the world to compete at the FAI World Air Games. Their planes, which cost around €400,000 each, were shipped here specially for the event, and their aerial battle could be seen and heard echoing all along the coast.

Gold for Donatas in the F3P Aeromodelling

aeromodellinggoldThe first gold medal was won in the FAI World Air Games last night (December 1). Lithuania’s Donatas Pauzuolis took first place in the indoor aerobatic aeromodelling, which took place in the Dubai Mall. "I’m very happy to have won," he said afterwards. "It’s a dream come true."

Donatas lead the field throughout the competition, and in his final heat, the fourth of four, he knew he had done enough to win. His two-minute routine was beautiful, artistic and entertaining all in the same breath.

"That’s a whopping 84 points for artistic quality, and rightly so," boomed the commentator when the scores flashed up on the giant screen above the Dubai Ice Rink.

Early birds and airships

stefanhandlNo one gets up earlier than the airship teams - there are four of them here in Dubai. Today, December 2, they did one flight with two tasks. 
 
Task 1 was a speed pylon race around three pylons. The course is 2km long and here the best time performance gets the most points. The fastest time was 36 minutes.

Record-breaking balloon pilot discovers aeromodelling...

Troy-Bradley-USRecord-breaking, trans-Pacific hot air balloon pilot Troy Bradley was in the crowd cheering on the competitors in the Aeromodelling final at the Dubai Mall last night, December 1. "This is all new to me," he said. "I'm enjoying it very much."

Together with his Two Eagles Balloon Team partner Leonid Tiukhtyaev, Bradley shattered the long-standing distance and duration world records by flying from Saga in Japan to Mexico in January this year.

Five minutes with Breitling pilot Aude Lemordant

Aude-2If you're boarding an Air France Boeing 777 and there is a pretty, blond pilot called Aude Lemordant in the cockpit, you can relax in the knowledge that you're in safe hands.

The petite Frenchwoman is the reigning World Aerobatics Champion, and spends her spare time looping crazily around the sky and flying upside down for fun.

She is delighted to be here in Dubai to compete in the Aerobatics event, flying for official FAI sponsor Breitling.

"This is such a fantastic place to fly," she said. "Out in the desert all you can see is camels and sand dunes. And here at the Palm, you are flying amidst all these incredible buildings."

US Paragliding Aerobatics pilot to unveil new tricks at FAI World Air Games

Max-Marien-JPGIt's rare to find competitors from the US in Paragliding Aerobatics competitions. The sport of paragliding has a relatively small following there, and there are few pilots who embark on the niche daredevil discipline of performing aerobatic manoeuvres in the sky.

One American who does compete is relative newcomer Max Marien, 27. He has come all the way from San Diego in California to Dubai to compete with what he says is a trio of new stunts he's developed. "They've never been seen in a competition before," he said ahead of the contest in the United Arab Emirates.
