48th Coupe Aéronautique Gordon Bennett
Sport : Ballooning (Gas Balloons)
Date : 26 August 2004 to 4 September 2004
Location : Thionville (FRA)
Winners : Team USA 1 - Richard ABRUZZO and Carol Rymer DAVIS
The distance flown by the winners (1802 km in 52 hours) is the fourth longest in the long history of the Gordon Bennett race and has only been exceeded in 1993 by Starkbaum/Roehsler (Austria) - 1832 km, in 1910 by Hawley / Post (USA) - 1888 km and in 1912, the famous 2191 km flown by Bienaime/Rumpelmayer (France). However, before WW1 all competitors flew with much larger balloons (2200 cubic meters) filled with lamp gas (0.39 kg/cu m).
This is the first time that a victorious crew has included a woman. Several women balloonists have taken part in Gordon Bennett races, but so far only three have ever mounted the podium, all in the last 10 years :
- Silvia Wagner (Austria) : 3rd place in 1994 with Thomas Lewetz
- Danielle Francoeur (Canada) : 2nd place in 1999 with Leo Burman
- Carol Rymer Davis (USA) : 2nd place in 2000 with Richard Abruzzo
For all these reasons, this memorable 48th edition of the Gordon Bennett race has a place in history.
