FAI Centenary celebrations in Paris

On the occasion of the FAI Annual General Conference, the Aero-Club de France invites "aviation heroes" to Paris to celebrate the Centenary of FAI.

The event will start on Wednesday 12 October at the "Hôtel de Ville de Paris" with the FAI Awards Ceremony for medals and diplomas awarded by FAI for the year 2004.

Attended by delegates from all over the world, the two-day FAI Annual General Conference will close with the official celebration of the FAI Centenary on Friday 14 October, exactly 100 years after the foundation of FAI. Some of greatest living aviators will attend this "High Flyers' Night" at the Senate (Palais de Luxembourg) - personalities like Buzz Aldrin, Steve Fossett, Bertrand Piccard, Catherine Maunoury, Svetlana Kapanina and Valery Poliakoff.

The press and media will be invited to a unique opportunity to meet these heroes from 10 to 12.00 on Saturday 15 October at the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Hôtel Potocki, 27 avenue de Friedland, 75008 Paris; Metro Etoile). The press conference, and opportunities for photos and individual interviews will be followed by a buffet lunch.

The Aero-Club de France was the very first national aero-club. Founded in 1898 to "encourage aerial navigation", the Aero-Club de France was responsible for the creation of FAI in 1905. In 1909, the Aero-Club de France issued the first pilot’s licenses to Santos Dumont, Louis Blériot and the Wright Brothers. Since then, the AéCF has evolved to suit changing circumstances, but still maintains many of its initial roles. On the occasion of the FAI Centenary, the President of the Aero-Club de France, Jean-François Georges, wished to "pay tribute to the great achievers" in each air sport discipline.

FAI President Pierre Portmann, elected in 2004 and a long-standing French resident, is very pleased to be celebrating the FAI Centenary in Paris : "The history of FAI consists mainly of colourful and independent characters who pushed forward the limits of what can be done in the air. It's a great privilege for us to be the heirs of these exceptional men and women who marked the history of FAI. The "dream of Icarus” is still alive, and our job is to perpetuate this dream into the future".

Célébrations du centenaire de la FAI à Paris

L'Aéro-Club de France invite à Paris les héros de l'aéronautique dans le cadre de la Conférence générale annuelle et du centenaire de la Fédération Aéronautique Internationale.

L’évènement débutera le mercredi 12 octobre à l'Hôtel de Ville de Paris lors de la cérémonie de remise des distinctions (médailles et diplômes) décernées par la FAI pour l'année 2004 (FAI Awards).

Au terme des deux jours de la Conférence générale annuelle à laquelle assisteront les délégués du monde entier, le centenaire de la FAI sera célébré, exactement un siècle après sa fondation, le vendredi 14 octobre au Sénat, lors de la nuit des « High Flyers ». Cette soirée réunira quelques-uns des plus grands héros de l’aéronautique tels que Buzz Aldrin, Steve Fossett, Bertrand Piccard, Catherine Maunoury, Svetlana Kapanina ou Valery Poliakoff.

La presse sera invitée à une rencontre exceptionnelle avec ces héros le samedi 15 octobre à la Chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie de Paris (Hôtel Potocki, 27 avenue de Friedland, 75008 Paris; Metro Etoile) de 10 heures à 12 heures ; au programme, conférence de presse, photos et interviews individuelles. Cette rencontre sera suivie d’un déjeuner-buffet.

L'Aéro-Club de France, premier aéro-club national au monde, fut fondé en 1898, comme « société d’encouragement à la locomotion aérienne », et fut à l’origine de la création de la FAI en 1905. Dès 1909, il délivre les premiers brevets de pilotes à Santos Dumont, Louis Blériot, les frères Wright… Depuis lors, l'AéCF adapte son action tout en conservant certains de ses rôles originels. Dans le cadre du centenaire de la FAI, le Président de l'Aéro-Club de France Jean-François Georges "a souhaité rendre hommage aux « grands » de toutes les disciplines aériennes".

Pierre Portmann, Président de la FAI depuis octobre 2004 et français d’adoption, est ravi de fêter le centenaire à Paris : "L’histoire de la FAI, c’est essentiellement une série de personnes hautes en couleur et avec un caractère indépendant qui ont poussé les frontières de ce qui est possible en l’air. C’est un grand privilège pour nous d’être les héritiers de ces personnages extraordinaires qui ont marqué notre Fédération. Nous constatons que le rêve d’Icare est toujours très vivant. Nous avons le devoir de voir perpétuer ce rêve dans l’avenir."
