FAI Centenary - Unique Celebrations

The splendid events organised by the Aero Club of France within the framework of the FAI’s Annual General Conference in Paris (12 – 15 October 2005) provided a fitting way for FAI to celebrate its Centenary, exactly 100 years after its foundation on 14 October 2005.

Municipal Splendour

Almost three hundred guests attended the Opening Ceremony on 12 October in the prestigious setting of the Paris City Hall (Hôtel de Ville), where FAI medals and diplomas were awarded by FAI President Pierre Portmann to some 40 outstanding aviators who had made the journey to Paris from all around the world to receive their distinctions.

The Centenary Gold Air Medal went to Jon Johanson (Australia) for his several round-the-world flights in a tiny home-built Vans RV-4 aircraft.

An Evening at the Museum
The early aviation pioneers were remembered on the evening of 13 October at the Le Bourget Air and Space Museum, where avid collector Jacques Perier had assembled a special exhibition of posters and photographs from the early years of the 20th century (open until 30 October). Museum Director Gérard Feldzer welcomed Conference delegates from the cockpit of Concorde, and then invited them to dine in the “Hall de la Cocarde”, surrounded by French military aircraft of all vintages.

“High Flyers Night”
On the actual day of the Centenary, 14th October, the Aero Club of France had succeeded in bringing together in the glittering setting of the Senate (Palais de Luxembourg) an array of prominent personalities from virtually all the areas of activity represented by FAI : the “High Flyers”. Led by Apollo 11 astronaut and moon-walker Buzz Aldrin, each of these "High Flyers" received the Centenary Medal, depicting early Parisian aeronautical exploits and symbolising the century–old link between the FAI and the Aero Club de France.
