Gernot Bruckmann (left), a professional radio-controlled aeromodel pilot from Austria, won gold at the 2017 FAI F3P World Championship for Indoor Aerobatic Model Aircraft in France, when it finished at the weekend. The win came after a close-fought week-long competition that was held at the Rotonde Gymnasium in Strasbourg between 19-25 February 2017.

This is fast developing into the latest craze. Flying small radiocontrolled multicopters via video goggles for a first-person view is becoming increasingly popular.

In recent years, electric flying has seen the totally unspectacular emergence of a new electric glider class (F5J). It is characterised by its large (maximum span of 4 m) but very lightweight RC glider models (800 to 1500 g) equipped with relatively small electric motors (approx. 500 W).
The FAI, World Air Sports Federation, is putting itself at the centre of the international discussions about drones and drone sports as they happen around the world.
As the world governing body for all air sports recognised by the International Olympic Committee, FAI is responsible for world drone sports. As part of its work in this area, the Federation has now established a Working Group on matters related to drones, comprised of members of the FAI Executive Board and the Executive of the Aeromodelling Commission as well as senior FAI officials.
