CIAM Flyer 04-2011: Quiet Emotions at the FAI European Championships for Free Flight Model Aircraft F1D

F1D CIAM Flyer 04-2011This year, the European Championships in indoor flying were once more held in Belgrade. While flights in many model flying competition categories are getting increasingly faster, longer and higher, indoor free-flight is dominated by a real slow-down culture.

This does not at all mean that these models' competition flights are any less thrilling and attractive. On the contrary – the silently circling small aeroplanes with their slowly rotating propellers fascinate everyone.

CIAM Flyer 03-2011 : ...and it does fly!

archaeopteryxThe Archaeopteryx Story - from Primeval Bird to a Glider Plane that can be Launched on Foot.

The flying capabilities of the Archaeopteryx – or primeval bird as it is also called – are disputed in modern palaeontology. Meantime, numerous fossils of bird-like dinosaurs have been discovered. Whether Archaeopteryx's flying attempts were only gliding flights or whether it could actually take off from the ground remains unclear.

What is certain, however, is that the glider "Archaeopteryx", built by two aeroplane designers, can be launched on foot from any slope or mountain, weighs only 50 kg and has excellent flight characteristics. There were two official changes of the rules since than, but a complete revision should be prepared for 2012.

At the 18th WSMCh 2010 held in Irig (Serbia) were given proposals to make the rules shorter, easier to understand and supported by more drawings that are more illustrative than verbal descriptions.
