The 2014 CIVL Plenary ended in Bali this February 23rd. Some 40 delegates and alternate delegates representing 27 countries were present. The FAI Environmental Commission (EnvC) has established the Angelo d’Arrigo Diploma, a new FAI environmental award which aims at recognising and promoting major contributions in the field of environmental and sustainable development, in accordance with the development of a philosophy and a vision of sport aviation that increasingly wants to be respectful of the environment that surrounds it. Over the past few weeks, the Paragliding Committee created the final (we hope) revision of our CIVL Competition Class document. The changes to the version published early January are clearly marked. In 2011, the qualification criteria for all Category 1 hang gliding events were modified by the Plenary. The idea was to make criteria harder, so safety would be improved. Unfortunately, the Plenary did not realize that the new requirements, if adapted to Class 1 championships, are just not working for Class 2, 5 and Sport, and for Women Class 1 specific championships. The Paragliding Pre-Worlds in Roldanillo, Colombia, came to a successful conclusion last week. Four tasks were flown in 6 days and 147 pilots had the opportunity to try out CIVL’s experimental ‘Final Glide Decelerator’ techniques, the conical end of speed section (CESS) and the arrival altitude time bonus (AATB).
