The Coupe Aéronautique Gordon Bennett, the FAI World Long Distance Gas Balloon Championship, is the oldest and most prestigious event in aviation and the ultimate challenge for the pilots. It is a story full of adventure, skill, courage, survival and luck. The goal is simple: to fly the furthest non-stop distance from the launch site. The international competition was initiated by adventurer and newspaper tycoon James Gordon Bennett Jr. in 1906. Little did he know that this race was to continue until today. The 59th edition is hosted in Pau, France, on the northern edge of the Pyrenees, 100 km from the Atlantic Ocean and 50km from Spain. In a few days 16 teams of the world’s best gas balloon pilots representing 8 nations will compete. Given the current weather-outlook, all looks for a ”go” on Friday night around sunset at the Hippodrome of Pau. The first World Gliding Championship in the 13.5 Metre Class took place at Pociunai, Lithuania 1-16 August 2015. The competition was held in combination with the Lithuanian Club Class/Mix Class Nationals. The combined event served as a practice event for next year’s 34th World Gliding Championships in the Club, Standard, and 20 meter Multi-seat Classes. Coming from all parts of the globe, the participants in the 28th FAI World Aerobatic Championship received a warm welcome by the population of Châteauroux, France, this afternoon. Crowds cheered the pilots as they paraded down the streets of the city until the main place, where more than 2000 people had gathered to greet them and attend the opening ceremony. For the third time in history, Poland is hosting an FAI Category 1 event for microlights. On Saturday 15 August, the 13th FAI European Microlight Championships were declared open at Kruszyn Airfield in Wloclawek, some 200 km northwest of Warsaw. As the 15th FAI World Helicopter Championship came to an end on Saturday at the airport Przylep in Zielona Góra, the Russian domination in this spectacular sport was confirmed. Maxim Sotnikov and Oleg Puajukas finished at the top of the general rankings, while Russia also triumphed in the teams, before Belarus and Ukraine. A great 8th place was obtained by the best Polish crew – brothers Marcin and Michal Szamborski. In the junior rankings, Jędrzej Wiler and Jacek Ciszewski came second. Saturday was the most important day of the 15th FAI World Helicopter Championship. As was expected, Russians took the most valuable trophies. In the overall standings, which consist of the sum of the points obtained in the four Navigation, Precision Competition, Fender Rigging and Parallel Slalom competitions, Maxim Puajukas and Oleg Sotnikov won with 1194,1 points (out of 1200 possible). The next steps on the podium were taken by Viktor Korotaev and Vladimir Ziablikov (1183,6 points) and Aleksei Maiorov and Sergei Kostin (1177,4 points). In the second day of the 15th FAI World Helicopter Championship, points that counted for the general rankings could be made during the Fender Rigging event. Like the day before, representatives of Russia were the leaders of the event. Today most Polish fans cheered the two brothers Marcin and Michal Szamborski, who rose to the 5th place of the overall rankings. The 15th FAI World Helicopter Championship started on Thursday in Zielona Gora, Poland. In the first event of the competition, the navigation, Russians pilots took the first six places. In the overall standings of the Championship the Viktor Korotaev/Vladimir Ziablikov crew top the ranking with a score of 299,7 points. The best result from a Polish team was achieved by Maciej Wegrzecki and Jakub Malec. With a score of 272,0 points they are at the 12th position.
