Jean-Marc Badan appointed new FAI Secretary General

Jean-Marc_BadanJean-Marc Badan, the previous FAI Sports Director and Deputy to the Secretary General, has been appointed as the new Secretary General of the FAI – the International Air Sports Federation. He will formally take up his appointment in Lausanne, Switzerland, on 1st October 2011.

7th FAI Junior World Gliding Championships: four valid days so far

5318-2011_7th_FAI_Junior_W_Gliding_Musbach_GERDespite the weather, we have had so far 4 valid days in Standard Class and 5 in Club Class at the 7th FAI Junior World Gliding Championships in Musbach, Germany. The Organisers are trying to catch every single opportunity to fly, but we already had two days with only one or two finishers. That's gliding!

News from the 16th FAI European Gliding Championships in Pociunai

6716_-_2011_egc2011_Pociunai_LIT_001After two difficult days in marginal soaring conditions, the 15m Class has now achieved 9 contest days and the 18m and Open Classes 8 contest days.

Three French pilots, Christophe Ruch, Denis Guerin and Louis Bouderlique, lead in the 15m class. Two Polish pilots, Karol Staryszak and Zbigniew Nieradka, head the 18m rankings, closely followed by the IGC Secretary, Peter Eriksen of Denmark.

7th FAI Junior World Gliding Championships

The competition has started! The 2011 gliding season in Europe is severely affected by bad weather. After three consecutively cancelled days, we were eventually able to set a task for the two classes flying the 7th FAI Junior World Gliding Championships in Musbach, Germany.

News from the 16th FAI European Gliding Championships in Lithuania

Day 3 at the 16th European Gliding Championship (3rd August) saw classic racing conditions with speeds achieved in excess of 120 km/h, over courses of up to 500 kms. Full results are here Day winners were Kim Tipple (GBR) in the Open Class, and two Danish pilots Arne Boye-Moeller in the 18M and Henrik Breidahl in the15M Classes .

First launches in the 16th FAI European Gliding Championships at Pociunai

EGC2011 Pociunai logoThe first launches in the 16th FAI European Gliding Championships at Pociunai, Lithuania, have just started. Conditions look difficult for today, with a low cloud-base and thundery showers developing this afternoon. Pilots have been set to fly round tasks varying from about 200 to more than 400 kms in length.

The 4th FAI World GP Gliding Championship is now over and the new Grand Prix World Champion is the Italian Giorgio Galetto. Sebastian Neagel (GER) finishes second and Peter Hartman (AUT) third.

Due to a complicated and rapidly evolving situation here at the 16th FAI European Gliding Championships in Nitra, where showers are racing in on the one side before the top cover has burned off on the other - which way to run??? - World Class will now fly a C task and a new B task has been prepared for the other three classes.

16th FAI European Gliding Championships: Make or break day

Today, Friday 29th July, dawned sunny and bright at the 16th FAI European Gliding Championships in Nitra but the daunting cloud cover moved in very quickly. Assigned area tasks, with areas instead of points to fly towards, giving pilots more freedom to avoid showers and storms, have been set in all classes but already, the World Class has been changed to a B Task as the weather to the south became quickly less favourable and a more northerly first area has been substituted with little difference in distance to fly.
