London 2012 Airspace restrictions

2012Logo LondonOlympicsAs part of the security programme for the upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games, the airspace over London and other Games venues will be subject to restrictions this summer.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has full details of the restrictions on its website:


You can download the leaflet ‘London 2012 Airspace Guide’ which contains all the necessary information to adhere to the restrictions or to avoid the zone for the duration of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.


The UK Government has declared repeatedly that it takes the threat of a rogue aircraft very seriously and will take measures to counter unauthorised flights within the restricted zones. The CAA leaflet is easy to understand and will help you adhere to the temporary rules during the Olympics this year.

Winners of the 2012 FAI Young Artists Contest named

D-YAKOVLEV-2012art3-1bigBudding artists once again shone at the FAI Young Artists Contest, a painting competition where youngsters have the opportunity to express their talent and passion for flight.

This year’s theme “Silent Flight” proved to be particularly inspiring with 111 artists competing from 14 FAI Members countries. Although almost all air sports were featured on the paintings, ballooning and hang gliding, with the ocean as a background, were the most represented subjects. Among all the entries, many of them immediately caught the eyes of the jury, which made it a difficult task to decide on the final rankings for all of the three age categories.

Leinikki joins FAI Head Office as IT Manager

Visa-Matti LeinikkiThe FAI Head Office has pleasure in announcing that Mr. Visa-Matti Leinikki has been appointed as the new FAI IT Manager. He will start in his new position on 1 May 2012.

Visa-Matti Leinikki, 45, from Finland, comes to the FAI with a 25-year experience in software development, including more than 16 in several positions related to internet solutions. A gliding pilot since 1982, he flew over the years in more than 30 national and international gliding competitions, and held several positions within the FAI as an Alternate Delegate, Delegate and Vice President of the FAI Gliding Commission (IGC). He also attended several FAI gliding competitions as an official and is active in aeromodelling as well as in motorgliding and microlights.


Robert Hughes appointed FAI Senior Sports Manager

Rob HUGHESWe are pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Robert (Rob) Hughes as the new FAI Senior Sports Manager. He will join the FAI Office in Lausanne on 1 March 2012.

Following Jean-Marc Badan’s promotion to FAI Secretary General and as announced last October during the FAI General Conference, a recruitment process has been conducted to fill the position of FAI Senior Sports Manager.

Hempleman-Adams, Arpagaus and Meertens honoured at the FAI General Conference

The closing ceremony of the 105th FAI General Conference saw three personalities recognised for their achievements and dedication to air sports, with the awarding of the FAI Gold Air Medal by FAI President John Grubbström to British balloonist David Hempleman-Adams and the appointments as FAI Companions of Honour of Willy Arpagaus and Henk Meertens. On this occasion, well-known aviation figure Odette Balesi-Rousseau gave a remarkable speech on the role of the FAI Companions of Honour for which she has a coordinating role.

FAI awards presented at the 105th FAI General Conference in Belgrade

Aviation personalities were honoured yesterday night at the 2011 FAI Awards Ceremony held in Belgrade, Serbia, as part of the Opening Ceremony of the 105th FAI General Conference.

Coming from all around the world, more than 20 recipients of FAI diplomas and medals were presented their awards by FAI President John Grubbström.


S.J. René de Monchy

It is with great sadness that we announce the death on 31 August 2011 of S.J.René de Monchy (NED).

Many have made enormous contributions to the development of the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), but few have done so whilst retaining the trust, respect, admiration, and affection of all those they served. Rene De Monchy, who died peacefully in Rotterdam last Wednesday, after a long illness bravely borne, was such a person.


Jean-Marc Badan appointed new FAI Secretary General

Jean-Marc_BadanJean-Marc Badan, the previous FAI Sports Director and Deputy to the Secretary General, has been appointed as the new Secretary General of the FAI – the International Air Sports Federation. He will formally take up his appointment in Lausanne, Switzerland, on 1st October 2011.
