London 2012 Airspace restrictions

As part of the security programme for the upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games, the airspace over London and other Games venues will be subject to restrictions this summer. Budding artists once again shone at the FAI Young Artists Contest, a painting competition where youngsters have the opportunity to express their talent and passion for flight. This year’s theme “Silent Flight” proved to be particularly inspiring with 111 artists competing from 14 FAI Members countries. Although almost all air sports were featured on the paintings, ballooning and hang gliding, with the ocean as a background, were the most represented subjects. Among all the entries, many of them immediately caught the eyes of the jury, which made it a difficult task to decide on the final rankings for all of the three age categories. The FAI Head Office has pleasure in announcing that Mr. Visa-Matti Leinikki has been appointed as the new FAI IT Manager. He will start in his new position on 1 May 2012. Visa-Matti Leinikki, 45, from Finland, comes to the FAI with a 25-year experience in software development, including more than 16 in several positions related to internet solutions. A gliding pilot since 1982, he flew over the years in more than 30 national and international gliding competitions, and held several positions within the FAI as an Alternate Delegate, Delegate and Vice President of the FAI Gliding Commission (IGC). The closing ceremony of the 105th FAI General Conference saw three personalities recognised for their achievements and dedication to air sports, with the awarding of the FAI Gold Air Medal by FAI President John Grubbström to British balloonist David Hempleman-Adams and the appointments as FAI Companions of Honour of Willy Arpagaus and Henk Meertens. It is with great sadness that we announce the death on 31 August 2011 of S.J.René de Monchy (NED). Many have made enormous contributions to the development of the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), but few have done so whilst retaining the trust, respect, admiration, and affection of all those they served.
