What does 2011 hold for Air Sports competitions ?

After a year full of great competitions and fantastic performances in 2010, what can we expect for 2011 ? The answer is “a lot” ! World and Continental Championships, World Cups, almost 40 category 1 events in total will take place next year.

February: first event of an exciting year
The category 1 events will start in February with the 13th FAI World Para-Ski Championships in the Austrian ski resort of Gosau.

Brasilian students and teachers build a World Record breaking aircraft

Students and teachers joined forces to design and build an aircraft that broke no less than four World Records!

The records have been officially ratified today by the FAI in the category of aircraft with piston engine, propeller and total takeoff weight of up to 300 lbs (1C-1.a/0) for the following achiements:

1) Time to Climb to 3,000 Meters: 8 min 15 sec
2) Speed Over a 15 Kilometer Course: 329 kmh
3) Speed Over a 100 Kilometer Closed Course: 327 kmh
4) Speed Over a 3 Kilometer Course: 360 kmh

International Parachuting Championships & Golf Cup, 5-17 January 2011, Dubai, Emirates

The first parachuting competition of the year looks as though it is going to be a very large one. At the close of "official" registration there were 189 athletes from 28 Nations competing in Accuracy; 92 athletes from 24 Nations in Canopy Piloting and 26 Formation Skydiving teams. Martin Rutty and Simon Lichtenstein

It is with great sadness that CIG has been informed of the tragic loss of two British pilots in a helicopter crash in the South of France on 9th December 2010. Martin Rutty and Simon Lichtenstein were a highly respected team competing at the highest levels of World and Open Championships for more than 10 years.

Both had been flying helicopters for many years and highly experienced.

Martin and Simon were family men. The Commission’s condolences, sympathy and support go out to the family’s in their tragic loss.

FAI President hails Tochigi Championship a success

Having returned to Sweden after taking part in the Tochigi Hot Air Balloon International Championship as a private competitor, FAI President Dr. John Grubbström shares his impressions of the competition.

"It has been a very competitive Championship, with the very best pilots in attendance, including World Champion Johnny Petrehn, and I must say that I have been impressed by the high level of the observers: they were really world class."

Hauk gives a last Aeromusicals performance before bowing out of talent show

Czech Aeromusicals pilot Martin Hauk made his exit from Czech and Slovakian talent show “Talentmania” in the final last Sunday.

During the final show featuring the best 8 performers of the year, Hauk was not selected in the top 2 positions despite showing the full extent of his talent in another great performance.
