New FAI President and Executive Board elected

John Grubbström has become the new FAI President following his election at the FAI General Conference held from 5 to 10 October 2010 in Dublin. John Grubbström succeeded Pierre Portmann, who stepped down from the FAI Presidency after six years in office and was elected FAI President of Honour.

Bidding for the World Air Games 2013 now open

The FAI has today announced the start of the bid process for the World Air Games 2013. FAI Members, cities, regions, event organisers or commercial bodies from all over the world are invited to participate. Expressions of interest must be submitted to the FAI by no later than 30 November 2010.

Aviation contributors celebrated at the 2010 FAI Awards Ceremony

2001-Fai-TomMcC  0064Highlight of the Opening Ceremony for the 104th FAI General Conference held this year in Dublin, the 2010 FAI Awards Ceremony celebrated yesterday night an array of air sports personalities and entities from all over the world.

With bestowing awards, the FAI aims to honour and recognise all those who have significantly contributed to aeronautics and astronautics, especially to sporting aviation.

Nick Kaltchev

It's with a great sadness that we have learned that Mr. Nick Kaltchev, President of the BULGARSKI NATSIONALEN AEROKLUB, died from a long illness on September 4th. Mr Kaltchev was a long standing figure of the FAI: IPC Delegate, FAI Vice-President and President of his National Aero Club, everyone enjoyed his presence at the various meetings he attended to.

Latest news from the Coupe Aéronautique Gordon Bennett

Of the three last flying balloons, teams Germany 1 and Great Britain 3 have now reported to have safely landed. The Swiss team Switzerland 2, composed of Kurt Frieden and Pascal Witpraechtiger, are still in the lead with a distance flown of 2,435.08 km.


At the time of writing the last balloon did not yet report back to the Competition Center and is now considered missing. Richard Abruzzo and Carol Rymer Davis from the American team USA2 were hit by severe weather over the Adriatic Sea early this morning. Search and Rescue operations are underway.

Coupe Aéronautique Gordon Bennett: Swiss and French teams neck and neck

The Swiss and French balloons are still flying and have already covered a distance of more than 1500km since their departure on 25th from Bristol. As in 2009, the Swiss and French are fighting for victory. Follow this great finish with the live tracking system on the Gordon Bennett website.


The FAI suffers a great loss: Fiona McEachern, IPC Committee Chair

It was with great sadness that we learned that Fiona McEachern, Chair of the IPC Formation Skydiving Committee, died in a tragic accident on 25 September 2010, at Tully airfield, North Queensland, Australia.

54th Coupe Aéronautique Gordon Bennett - International Gas Ballon Race

Up to 21 teams from 12 countries around the world will compete in the 54th Coupe Aéronautique Gordon Bennett. Taking off at dusk from a site near Bristol, the team which flies the furthest distance from the start point wins the race.
