Canopy Piloting, Accuracy Landing and Indoor AeroMusicals at the next World Games

For the first time in its history, the FAI will have three sports present at the World Games. Both Canopy Piloting (Parachuting) and Accuracy Landing (Paragliding) feature in the competition programme of the 2013 World Games that will take place in Cali, Colombia. The cost and risk of manned space flight has been high. The first confirmed in-flight fatality in the history of spaceflight occurred on April 24, 1967. Colonel Vladimir Komarov was killed when his Soyuz 1 spacecraft crashed during its return to Earth following parachute failure. The crew of Soyuz 11, Georgiy Dobrovolsky, Viktor Patsayev, Vladislav Volkov were killed on June 30, 1971, by exposure to the vacuum of space after undocking from the Salyut 1 space station. Space stations have been envisaged since at least 1869 when Everett Hale wrote about a 'brick moon'. Konstantin Tsiolkovsky and Hermann Oberth also published articles about manned spaceflight and space stations. In 1951, Wernher von Braun published his design for a wheeled space station. NASA's space shuttle fleet began setting records with its first launch on April 12, 1981 (exactly 20 years to the day after Gagarin’s flight !) and continues to set high marks of achievement and endurance. Starting with Columbia and continuing with Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour, the spacecraft has carried people into orbit repeatedly, launched, recovered and repaired satellites, conducted cutting-edge research and built the largest structure in space, the International Space Station. The Commission Internationale d’Aérostation (CIA), part of FAI, has published the World Pilot Ranking List taking into account the results of the 2 world championships for hot air airships (Russia, France). Airship competitions determine the most performing pilots in a combination of speed races navigational perfection and precision flying. Organisers favours such events generally attracting crowds of 20000 to 30000 spectators. The Ranking List is led by 4 time world champion J.-A.Besnard from Switzerland. Join the FAI YouTube Channel

To restore all of the sections of the FAI website, we finally had to migrate all the data to a newer version of the software we are using to manage the content of our website. This migration is now completed and in addition to the central part of the FAI website which has been working for a few days (except for some links and images), most of the FAI documents can be now downloaded from the Document Center. FAI President Dr. John Grubbström had the great honour to be awarded with the Juri Gagarin Medal at the CIAM meeting that recently took place in Lausanne, Switzerland. The medal was presented by Russian Representative Andre Pomorenko on behalf of the Russian Airsports Federation in commemoration of the close association of the Russian Airsports Federation and the FAI since Yuri Gagarin's "first man in space" flight on 12th April 1961 which was recognised by the FAI as a World Record.
